K Fantasy Rankings 2012

Gold Tier (every-week starter)

mason crosby packers Keeper and Dynasty K Rankings for 2012 Fantasy Football1. Mason Crosby, Packers

Drafting a kicker is far more about situation than talent. Look for kickers on offenses that are guaranteed to put up points. The Packers certainly fit the bill. Don’t worry about the cold weather factor–Crosby has proven that he can hit his kicks regardless of the temperature outside.

2. Stephen Gostkowski, Patriots

Again, you are drafting an entire offense here, rather than just a kicker. The Patriots will score a lot of points next season. On every single one of those points (excluding safeties and two-point convert attempts), Gostkowski will be involved.

3. David Akers, 49ers

This ranking probably seems to fly in the face of what I just said. The 49ers are not a potent offense in the same vein as the Packers, Patriots or Saints. However, their defense is so good that their offense gets a lot of opportunities. Whenever they stall in the red zone, Akers gets the chance to kick a field goal.

4. Sebastian Janikowski, Raiders

The rare case of a kicker being so good that he can overcome a bad offense and bad defense. The Raiders regularly let Janikowski attempt long field goals and he hits a good portion of them, which equates to fantasy points. He is less consistent than those above him in this list, but he’s also the one who has the best chance of putting up 15+ points and winning a game for your fantasy team.

LB Fantasy Rankings 2012

Gold Tier (every-week LB1)

desmond bishop packers 234x300 Keeper and Dynasty IDP Rankings for 2012 Fantasy Football1. Desmond Bishop, Packers

There is a new top dog in IDP fantasy football, a tackle machine who is locked into one of the most stable and optimal IDP situations in the NFL. Bishop is still undervalued in some fantasy circles, so jump on him if you can.

2. Patrick Willis, 49ers

If Bishop is 1A, then Willis has only dropped to 1B. The only reason he’s slipped at all is that he is finally playing next to a skilled, productive player (Navorro Bowman) who is taking away a few of his easy tackles. Willis is the superior player and he is being asked to perform more difficult tasks, like pass coverage, which yield less fantasy value.

3. Daryl Washington, Cardinals

Like those above him in this list, he’s another 3-4 ILB. The days of the 4-3 MLB being the stud to target in IDP fantasy football are over. He produces tackles and turnovers in a linebacking corps that lacks talent around him.

4. Derrick Johnson, Chiefs

It took Johnson a few years to hit his peak and establish consistency in his game, but he is there now. Ride him as long as he keeps it up.

Fantasy Football Rookie Rankings for 2011

Last updated: May 5, 2011

These rankings are for keeper leagues or dynasty leagues that conduct a separate rookie draft. All rankings assume a non-PPR, standard scoring system.

Offensive Rookie Rankings

1. Mark Ingram, RB, Saints
Value score: 93

Make no mistake about it–Ingram isn’t nearly as talented as Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson. That said, he is pro-ready, very reliable and the Saints liked him enough to give up a 2012 first-rounder to get him. He joins one of the best offenses in the league and will face only moderate competition for carries (Reggie Bush should be released and Pierre Thomas is best used as a backup). He is the guy to get if you own rookie draft pick 1.1.

aj green bengals Fantasy Football Rookie Rankings for 20112. A.J. Green, WR, Bengals
Value score: 92

The No. 4 pick in the NFL Draft should be the No. 2 pick in your rookie draft. Andy Dalton might not be the most reassuring sight at quarterback, but he’s an intelligent, resourceful quarterback and he will send plenty of passes Green’s way. It’s close, but Green has a slight edge over Julio Jones.

3. Julio Jones, WR, Falcons
Value score: 91

Jones is going to be a very hot name as rookie drafts approach. The Falcons gave up a king’s ransom to move up for him and he’s set to begin catching passes from Matt Ryan in one of the league’s best offenses. Temper your expectations a bit. Jones is still quite raw and he’ll likely be fourth in line for touches (after Roddy White, Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez).

Linebacker (LB) Rankings

patrick willis 49ers idp Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty IDP Rankings for 20111. Patrick Willis, 49ers

He’s simply the best player at his position. He should be the first IDP player off the board in all formats.

2. Jon Beason, Panthers

Ignore the fact that he spent some time at OLB in 2010. He’ll be back in the middle in 2011 and beyond.

3. Jerod Mayo, Patriots

Mayo enjoyed a breakout season in 2010. He’s the leader of a young and improving Patriots defense. Don’t expect many big plays, but the tackle numbers will be there.

4. James Laurinaitis, Rams

I’m looking for players who are a lock to put up good tackle numbers and have little competition from other players in the defense. Laurinaitis certainly fits this description.

mason crosby packers Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty K Rankings for 20111. Mason Crosby, Packers
Value score: 97

No danger of losing his job. Plays on a top-flight offense. Big leg. The only knock on Crosby is that he plays in the elements. Wind and snow can be a factor late in the season, but it’s not enough to knock him out of top spot.

2. Stephen Gostkowski, Patriots
Value score: 96

Pretty much in the same situation as Crosby.

antonio gates chargers Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty TE Rankings for 20111. Antonio Gates, Chargers
Value score: 98

Gates is the equivalent of an elite wide receiver. Yes, he misses time due to injuries. So do many others on this list. When he’s on the field, Gates’ value surpasses everyone else at the tight end position.

2. Dallas Clark, Colts
Value score: 96

The Colts really missed Dallas Clark in 2010. Jacob Tamme filled in admirably, but he can’t replace everything that Clark does. Expect a full recovery for Peyton Manning’s favorite target and a return to his 2009 level of production.

calvin johnson lions 204x300 Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty WR Rankings for 2011
1. Calvin Johnson, Lions
Value score: 99

Players like Calvin Johnson aren’t supposed to exist. He has the height of a basketball player but he runs with the fluidity a cornerback. He looks like he’s defying gravity when he goes up to make catches that he has no business making. Imagine what Johnson could do if he ever had stability at the quarterback position. Even if Matthew Stafford never gets healthy, Johnson is talented enough (and gets targeted in the red zone enough) that he’s the #1 player on this list.

2. Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals
Value score: 97

A lot of people are going to be down on Fitz after a somewhat disappointing season, but he just experienced rock bottom when it comes to quarterback play (he was catching passes from guys who wouldn’t even crack most NFL rosters, let alone see the field) and he still produced top-20 numbers. He is the most talented wide receiver in the league, bar none. Keep in mind that Fitzgerald can get out of his contract in Arizona after the 2011 season. I would not be shocked to see him bolt for greener pastures. The time is right to acquire him in dynasty leagues.

adrian peterson vikings Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty RB Rankings for 20111. Adrian Peterson, Vikings
Value score: 98

Adrian Peterson may ultimately fall short of what some of us had expected him to accomplish in the NFL. In his rookie year, he looked like the second coming of Jim Brown. While he may not set the record books on fire by the time he retires, he’s the best there is at the running back position. Don’t worry about who his quarterback is in 2011; Peterson has produced excellent fantasy numbers with a superstar at quarterback (Brett Favre, circa 2009) and a complete dud (Brett Favre, circa 2010).

2. Chris Johnson, Titans
Value score: 96

Is it time for us to give CJ2K a new nickname? CJ1.364K just doesn’t have the same ring to it. While Johnson may have fallen short of back-to-back seasons with 2,000 rushing yards (and far short of his prediction of 2,500), the fact remains that he put up great fantasy numbers while the rest of his team fell to pieces around him. He’ll do it again in 2011, especially because he’ll likely get himself a new contract if he produces a good season.

Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty QB Rankings for 2011

aaron-rodgers-packers

Last updated: January 19, 2011

These rankings are for non-PPR leagues with standard scoring systems.

Other positions: QB | RB | WR | TE | K | IDP

1. Aaron Rodgers, Packers
Value score: 97

On a points per game basis, Aaron Rodgers is as close to a sure thing as there is. He is a virtual lock to account for two or more touchdowns every week, plus solid yardage. He’s only 27 years old, which means he should remain at the top of these rankings for years to come. He can pass with the best of them and his rushing ability (he has at least four rushing TDs every season he has started) sets him above the rest. It’s scary to think that he’s still improving.

philip rivers chargers 246x300 Fantasy Football Keeper/Dynasty QB Rankings for 20112. Philip Rivers, Chargers
Value score: 94

What Philip Rivers accomplished in 2010 was very impressive. He managed to lead the league in passing yardage despite his best receiving threat, Vincent Jackson, sitting out most of the year and his second-best weapon, Antonio Gates, missing significant time due to injury. Rivers is a bit younger than Manning, Brees and Brady, so he gets the edge in these rankings.
