K Fantasy Rankings 2012
Gold Tier (every-week starter)
Drafting a kicker is far more about situation than talent. Look for kickers on offenses that are guaranteed to put up points. The Packers certainly fit the bill. Don’t worry about the cold weather factor–Crosby has proven that he can hit his kicks regardless of the temperature outside.
2. Stephen Gostkowski, Patriots
Again, you are drafting an entire offense here, rather than just a kicker. The Patriots will score a lot of points next season. On every single one of those points (excluding safeties and two-point convert attempts), Gostkowski will be involved.
3. David Akers, 49ers
This ranking probably seems to fly in the face of what I just said. The 49ers are not a potent offense in the same vein as the Packers, Patriots or Saints. However, their defense is so good that their offense gets a lot of opportunities. Whenever they stall in the red zone, Akers gets the chance to kick a field goal.
4. Sebastian Janikowski, Raiders
The rare case of a kicker being so good that he can overcome a bad offense and bad defense. The Raiders regularly let Janikowski attempt long field goals and he hits a good portion of them, which equates to fantasy points. He is less consistent than those above him in this list, but he’s also the one who has the best chance of putting up 15+ points and winning a game for your fantasy team.
