Update 4/23/2013: The uniforms have been officially unveiled. You can see photos of the new Jaguars uniforms here.
Update 2/5/2013: The Jaguars just unveiled their new logo. You can see the new Jaguars logo here. New uniforms will be unveiled at a date closer to the NFL Draft. Check back in April.
The Jacksonville Jaguars redesigned their uniforms only a few seasons ago, but they are ready to ditch the design and go with an entirely new, Nike-inspired look for the 2013 season. According to reports, there are two words that best describe the new Jaguars uniforms: all black.
That’s right, the Jags are reportedly ready to push teal to the side (the color will remain, but only as a secondary design element) and go with black helmets, black jerseys and black pants as its primary uniform combination. In an appearance on The Mike Dempsey Show on 1010XL radio in Jacksonville, new team owner Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan confirmed that the change is coming.
Of course, all-black uniforms are nothing new to the Jaguars. The team wore a black alternate jersey with black pants are various times during the mid-2000s. That look was scrapped when a new set of uniforms was introduced back in 2009. For the past two years, the Jags have only worn teal jerseys with white pants and white jerseys with black or white pants.
As of right now, there is no NFL team that sports this look on a consistent basis (the Ravens occasionally wear black alternate jerseys with their black pants, but Baltimore’s primary uniforms are purple).
The Jaguars reportedly wanted to redesign their duds for the 2012 season, but they didn’t meet the NFL’s deadline for submitting new designs and will be forced to wait until 2013 to debut the new look.
Fans of traditional football uniforms may want to avert their eyes come 2013, because the new Jaguars jerseys are rumored to be radical. Nike is taking over as the NFL’s uniform manufacturer in 2012 and the company has produced some revolutionary (some would say too revolutionary) football uniforms at the college football level (such as Oregon’s infamous and seemingly infinite number of uniform combinations). The Jaguars are rumored to be embracing Nike’s far-out aesthetic and their new uniforms will apparently be quite a site to see.
We’ll update this post with more details about the new Jacksonville Jaguars 2013 uniforms as they emerge. For now, let’s take a look at some concepts made by fans and amateur designers to get an indication of what the new uniforms may end up looking like. All of these designs are from the Chris Creamer Sports Logo Community, the premier site on the Internet for sports uniform lovers. If you like the uniform concepts below, go check out the site.
Click on the images below to see them in full size and, please, remember that they are only fan-made concepts and not an indication of what we’ll actually see on the field in 2013.
First up in an awesome Jaguars uniform concept by CCSCL member lenardo. He described the concept as follows: “I am usually not a fan of [all-black uniforms], but I liked the look of the black pants and both the white and teal pants looked terrible with the black jersey. Some unique things about the [uniform concept]: I decided to go no white and on the numbers, it is a shifting teal to gold look similar to the Oregon Ducks’ Rose Bowl uniform. I thought this went well with the helmet.
Next, we have a fantastic design from an artist who goes by the username mbannon92. This is another all-black look with hints of gold and teal. There’s a very good chance the new Jags uniforms will end up looking something like this.
This next design is from vmd9, whose work I am a fan of and who I have featured in similar posts previously. His Jaguars design doesn’t feature an all-black look, but it was too slick for me not to include it here.
Next up, we have a Jaguars concept from chestnutz. This one features an all-black alternate, but also a teal helmet. It would certainly qualify as radical, but I don’t think it’s the direction we’ll see the Jags go in.
Designer ccfan95 brings us a very radical design that features a new logo, cartoonish number font and even jaguar print side inserts. I don’t think we’ll see Nike take things this far with the new Jaguars uniforms, but you never know.
