Director Christopher Nolan chose Pittsburgh to stand in for Gotham City in The Dark Knight Returns and he shot a key scene in the movie at Heinz Field, the home of the Steelers. The scene is featured prominently in the trailer for the film and it includes a player that NFL fans will recognize. The clip shows a football game and (spoiler) an imploding field. Running for a touchdown in the scene is Hines Ward. Ward is easily recognizable in the trailer below, both by his trademark number 86 jersey and also by the fact that his name appears on his jersey. Take a look:
Nolan needed some actors to play the football players in his movie and, since he was already in Pittsburgh, so it makes sense that he would go to the most obvious place–the local NFL team. Reportedly, Ward is joined in the film by teammates Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu and James Farrior.
While it’s kind of jarring to see Ward show up in Gotham City, it’s cool to see an NFL star in such a big movie.
